NACRS is a national database used to collect and report on emergency, ambulatory and day surgery patients. In BC, NACRS data is used to record emergency data only.

Emergency data is the largest volume of patient care activity in Canada and for the first time we are able to report on this data.

NACRS data is timely and collection is based on national standards. The data reported from NACRS can be used on a national, authority and institution level to make decisions on patient outcomes, quality of care and support changes to policy and decision making.

NACRS data is captured from the ADT registration system (such as Meditech or Cerner) where the information is entered by Registration Clerks, Unit Clerks, Triage Nurses and Physicians.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) works in collaboration with the Canadian Emergency Department Information Systems (CEDIS) to establish a standard, minimum data set to enable regional, provincial and national comparisons. The database is composed of demographic, administrative and clinical data elements. The CEDIS group developed a national ED data set to capture the coding of Presenting Complaints and the Discharge Diagnosis which are regularly updated every year and every three years respectively.
