How do I obtain a birth certificate or replacement birth records.

Birth Registration (Notice of Birth)

The Birth Registration or Notice of Birth is a permanent, legal record of an individual's birth. *Information documented on the form is used to compile provincial birth counts and data relating to maternal and infant prenatal, intrapartum, and perinatal care.

The time required to both register a birth and issue birth certificates is on average 3 to 4 weeks. This includes receipt of the Notice of Birth from the hospital or medical attendant, processing and mail times. Incomplete or late documents will delay processing times.

To learn more about a Notice of Birth and Birth Registration, contact the Government of BC's website

Health care locations do not issue new birth certificates or replacements.

To make a request for a birth certificate or replacement, contact the Vital Statistics Agency's website

*This information is used in a variety of reports and decision support tools on a Provincial level, such as the Quarterly Digest, and BC Vital Statistics Annual reports. This information is also provided to Statistics Canada for inclusion in national level statistics.
