What is eHealth?

eHealth is describes the application of information and communications technologies in the health sector.

B.C.'s eHealth program is about using information technology to provide the best possible patient care.
The Province's eHealth projects bring lab results, diagnostic scans, medication histories, and electronic prescriptions online to help patients anywhere health care is delivered in British Columbia. These projects are being implemented in a gradual, phased approach.

eHealth will implement secure electronic health record systems to:
  • Bring better, faster, safer health care to British Columbians by giving authorized health professionals electronic access to secure, complete patient health records when and where they are required for delivering care.
  • Assure that access to patient information will be restricted to only those having a legal right and clear need, in accordance with provincial eHealth privacy protection policies.
  • eHealth will provide health information online to reduce delays, errors, test duplication and financial and environmental costs.
